17th Century Aubusson Tapestry of Persephone and Demeter

$8,000.00

Discover this astounding 17th century Aubusson tapestry depicting a mythological scene from antiquity of Persephone and her mother, the goddess Demeter gathering flowers before she is taken to the Underworld by Hades. Originally from a Chateau in Bordeaux. Designed as an individual panel to fit between two windows, it is a rare example of a tapestry scene solely featuring two women.

Flowers emerge from the fore and background of the tapestry, bursts of crocuses, roses, irises, lilies, and hyacinths all which are emblematic of Persephone. While Persephone is shown with a crown a top her head, her mother, the goddess of the harvest, is shown more simply with her hair bound up.

Condition: Good, old repairs and some loose knots. Wear consistent with age. See photos for details.
