About Marie-Françoise-Élisabeth de Savoie

Marie-Françoise-Élisabeth de Savoie, born in Paris on June 21, 1646 and died in Lisbon on December 27, 1683, was twice queen consort of Portugal through her marriages with Alfonso VI and then with Peter II. She is the youngest sister of Marie Jeanne, Duchess of Savoy, whose portrait is also available for sale.

Daughter of Charles-Amédée de Savoie-Nemours, and Elisabeth de Bourbon-Vendôme, she is the granddaughter of César de Vendôme, legitimized son that King Henry IV had by Gabrielle d'Estrées, and Françoise de Lorraine. Through her paternal grandmother, she descends from the Lorraine-Guise (branches of Aumale and Elbeuf), Diane de Poitiers, Charles VII and Agnès Sorel. Through the Savoie-Nemours, she descends from Charles VII and Marie d'Anjou, Louis XII and Anne de Bretagne as well as Lucrèce Borgia.

Marie-Françoise was married to King Alfonso VI of Portugal in 1666, in order to seal an alliance between Portugal and France against their common enemy, Spain.

Back in Lisbon, Marie Françoise married Pierre, brother of Alphonse. They also succeeded in having her marriage to Alphonse annulled on March 28, 1668, by means of a dubious procedure. On the following April 2, Marie-Françoise married Pierre, who had become regent, with a dispensation from the pope.
