History of the Morris Column

The first advertising columns appeared in Berlin, Germany in 1855 & were invented by German printer Ernst Litfaß (1816-1874). In the 19th century, advertising was not regulated & because of the rapid explosion of entertainment venues such as theaters, music-halls & cabarets, the streets were littered with posters known as “wild posting”. On August 1st 1868, French printer Gabriel Morris & his son Richard Gabriel won the competition launched by the City of Paris for the concession of exclusive advertising space. Inspired by the advertising columns in Berlin, the Morris column was designed to be with harmonious with the transformation Baron Haussmann made to the urban environment of Paris. To this day, it remains an iconic part of the city’s landscape & is still used to advertise movies, plays, & other entertainments.
