Late 18th Century Portrait of a Woman

$1,400.00
sold out

A sublime late 18th century gouache painting of a woman with a gilded frame. Though small in size, this striking work captivates your eye with its remarkable colors and brushwork. The composition is an intimate scene of a woman in a state of dishabille with her robe askew and bare shoulders visible as she gazes out at the viewer while holding up a small hand mirror. Likely depicting a concubine, it is evocative of Ingres’ Grande Odalisque in its subject matter and is clear reference to Venus with the pose and presence of the mirror. In late 18th century France, the Orientalist style emerged following Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt as the imagination of artists turned toward the Near East.
