History of the Grand Tour

The Grand Tour was a rite of passage in the 17th and 18th century for young well-born European men when they came of age. The trip throughout all of the great cities of Europe, often if not always stopping for a time in Venice and Rome, was essential for the education of these men in the matters of the world and the cultural study of antiquity. During this time souvenirs such as plaster cameos of Roman antiquities rose in popularity as keepsakes of the trip and since then have become antiques in their own right.
