17th Century Fashion Engravings—Pair

$850.00

Stunning pair of 17th century engravings from J. Mariette’s series of 25 costume prints published between 1696-1708. Both prints feature a gentleman and a lady beautifully dressed. Each print has a handwritten date 1696-1697 in pencil, possibly from the original printing.

Beautiful engraving by Mariette depicting a lady of quality wearing a scarf. A fine example of the fashions of Louis XIV. The elegant woman holds a fan in her hand. Originally from the galerie of Gilberte Cournand, the famed art dealer, French journalist, and dance critic who received the National Order of the Legion of Honor in 1999. Upon her death in 2005, her extraordinary collection of antiques were either put up for auction or donated to Centre national de la danse (National Dance Center). While only one print bears her sticker, they are both likely from her collection given their identical frames.

“Homme de Qualité en habit d’hiuer” Mariette - Man of Quality in winter clothes (circa 1696-7). Beautiful engraving by Mariette depicting a nobleman in winter attire. A high-quality account of fashions under Louis XIV. An elegant young man, dressed in a justaucorps with wide cuffs, waistcoat with cravat and knee-breeches, roll-up socks and shoes with buckles and heels. On his long curly hair a triangular hat. Around the waist a tied band with a large fur muff, a glove in the left hand. Accessories: (decorative) sword (?) on the left. The print is part of a series of 25 costume prints, published by J.Mariette, Paris, between 1696-1708. The same print is part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum.
